SCDs 'Labyrinth' Garden wins a Silver Gilt Award at Bloom 2009 -congratulations to the team!!

A group of garden design students came up with an imaginative solution to beat the recession for this year’s Bloom in the Park, and with the nation on the hunt for innovative ideas, the student’s concept attracted huge media attention.

The primary element of the student’s concept was a mown grass labyrinth, which was enclosed within a mown pattern inspired by the seasonal calendar and the effect of time on plant growth. “The concept has two primary objectives,” explained Adrian Eggers, who led the student group. “The first was to deliver an engaging garden space for practically no cost and the second is to provide visitors to Bloom with an opportunity for rest and reflection.”

“Labyrinths can be found in almost every faith and culture across the world,” exclaimed second-year design student, Fiona Crudden. “Being such a strong global symbol for reflection and growth we thought the use of a labyrinth was particularly apt for Ireland 2009. The creation was a simple interpretation of an old idea that will allow individuals to consider their place in the world and the surrounding spaces will provided intimate areas for family picnics. The best things in life really are free and beauty doesn’t have to cost the earth”

Bloom took place over the June bank holiday weekend from Thursday 28 May to Monday June 1st.
