Senior College Dun Laoghaire held its first annual Green Awareness Day on Wednesday 16th March 2011. The day was designed to celebrate and raise awareness of environmental issues within the College.
The Principal, Deirdre Hanamy started the day by explaining that SCD is now part of the Green-Campus Programme, based on the successful Green-Schools Programme. A Green Committee has been formed to aid the success of the Green Campus scheme and with members from both the student body and staff it is hoped that this group can ensure the project keeps its momentum. Deirdre stressed the importance of all staff and students working together on this project to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace and Restrict and therefore, help protect planet earth.
The College’s green campaign was then officially launched by Ciaran Cuffe from the Green Party who spoke about a number of key environmental issues. The message that each individual can make a difference was clearly driven home.
Everyone wore green for the occasion. There were some green events such as green nail art and face painting, a putting green competition, a raffle, a guess the number of boxes for a recycling competition and some welcome refreshments (including green tea!). All in all a great atmosphere was created and the mood was well and truly set for St. Patricks Day!
The Principal thanked all involved and in particular, companies who sponsored the many great prizes on the day.
