Non-EU Nationals

This information is presented as a guideline to assist applicants. The Irish Government may, at any time, make changes to any of the regulatory requirements addressed in this document. Applicants are obliged to consult with the local Irish Embassy or Consulate to determine updated requirements.

Senior College Dun Laoghaire - College of Further Education is a long-established, state-run College. It is situated 8 kilometres south east of Dublin city centre and is well served by public transport, including Dublin's urban rail system known as the DART.

 

SCD welcomes applications from international students. The College seeks to provide an environment where the international student will feel at home and gain both academically and personally. Modules of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) are provided, as well as special assistance in curriculum terminology and vocabulary.



General Course Information:

  • All courses begin in September and finish in late May. The courses are all full-time and involve on average 20 hours of timetabled classes per week.
  • All courses are conducted through English. The minimum standard of English required for admission to any of our courses is Higher Intermediate (First Certificate) or equivalent.
  • Students whose first language is not English should be able to demonstrate that they have the minimum required standard of English prior to joining the course. All International students are required to attend an advisory meeting in September prior to course commencement. 
  • Applicants are required to pay a deposit of €40 which must be forwarded with their application form. This fee will only be refunded where a place is not offered. Applicants will also be required to pay for textbooks, examinations and a College registration fee, and other miscellaneous costs, details of which will be notified on receipt of application.
  • Students should be in a position to attend classes at course commencement which is usually mid September. New students are not normally accepted onto a course after September 30 in the year of the course.

International students from non-EU countries

  • The annual course fee, determined by the Irish Government, for 2008/2009 was €3653 (this fee is subject to change). If you are a non-EU citizen with special leave to remain in Ireland please refer to the information at the end of this information sheet regarding the appropriate course fee to pay and the documentation to be submitted with your application.
  • You must satisfy immigration requirements in order to live and study in Ireland. For details please contact your local Irish Embassy or Consulate or the Irish Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform (www.inis.gov.ie). 
  • If you require a letter from the College stating that you are a registered student you must have fully completed the registration process, i.e. you must have sent the following to the College:
    • The completed application form (can be down-loaded here).
    • €40 deposit
    • A photocopy of your passport or national identity card
    • A copy of a valid residence permit 
    • Documentation to show that you meet course entry requirements, as outlined both in our brochure and on our website. All documentation you supply should be in English and the full details of Institutions attended and Certifying Bodies must be included. The College reserves the right to investigate all documentation provided. Falsified documentation, if presented, will result in the application being automatically rejected and the College being obliged to inform the relevant legal and visa authorities.
    • Evidence that you have a suitable level of English to enable you undertake the course.
    • The full course fee.

The receipt for fees and confirmation letter of registration will be sent to the address supplied. International students from non-EU countries not resident in Ireland may be required to present this documentation to the visa authorities in order to obtain a student visa.

The College is required to notify legal and visa authorities where students prematurely leave a course and seek fee refunds.

Note: It is the applicant’s responsibility to deal with the visa authorities with regard to obtaining a student visa. Under no circumstances will the College communicate with the visa authorities on any student's behalf.

  • In the event of it not being possible to complete the registration process, the full fee and all documentation will be returned by post. You should indicate the name and address of the person/organisation to whom a refund cheque and documents should be returned.
  • On arrival in the College in September you must present your original student visa.
